The Bendigo Writers Council reconvened last month after a lengthy absence in due to COVID-19. There was a mix of returning attendees and new attendees (at least, we think – it was hard to recognise everybody with masks on!).
After an introduction to the BWC committee, Penny Davies began the evening with a workshop about introducing characters and details about ourselves – the sorts of details we could use to help write and express characters. Attendees read out their writing with enthusiasm, and there was a grand mix of writing styles to boot.
After applause and laughs for our readers, Steve McCullough laid out an enticing scenario for us to write out, a whodunnit murder mystery – could we detail the demise of Fabian Fender, the who, the how, and the why? There was a flurry of focused concentration as pens hit the page once again. And afterwards, such a mix of interpretations of the writing exercise.
Perhaps we were slightly nervous as the evening began – uncertain whether we’d be seeing anybody, and then moments later whether our numbers were getting close to our limit – but it was a lovely evening for a return for the BWC.
